In French, the word “bière” means “beer,” but it also means “coffin.” I used to find this irritating, mostly because I didn’t know bière could mean coffin when we were reading “The Stranger” in French and, as such, completely misinterpreted the whole funeral home scene. But now I’ve decided it’s actually great because it means you can make all kinds of subtle death threats in French. For example, you could say, “Je voudrais te donner une bière,” and the person would probably just think you’re being friendly and want to have a drink with them, when really you’re slyly plotting murder.
